Domain NS Lookup and Whois

Two very useful tools when it comes to fault-finding and domain ownership are "NS Lookup" and "Whois"

NS Lookup

As outlined on our FAQ page regarding Name Servers and DNS, a NS Lookup tool will assist you to explore what DNS records are visible. Eg MX mail exchange, CNAME, TXT, A Records etc.

Your DNS records are critical to the working of your domain on the internet. If they are not visible, you may have an issue.

Click on the image and enter your domain name. Remember your domain name does not normally include "www" unless you are looking for DNS records associated with a website starting with 'www'

Query Type if set to Any Type will bring back all DNS records for the supplied domain name.

WhoIs Search

WhoIs domain search provides details on who owns a particular domain name you supply. The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires all accredited registrars to publish the registrant's contact information, domain creation and expiration dates and other information in the WhoIs listing as soon as a domain is registered. Some domain owners may elect to have their private details concealed leaving the registrars details in place.

WhoIs also provide details on the Name Server (Where the DNS records are retained) and access to contact the current owners, tech person etc.
